About the Project

Overview

Create a poster that uses letters as textural elements to examine/promote/visualize one of the following topics.

 
» Viruses 

» Genomics 

» Microorganisms 

» Immunity 

» Radio waves 

» Brain waves

Specifics

Parameters 

» Solutions should be purely typographic,     focusing on 
 type as text[ure]. 

» Type should be in the text size
   range, i.e. no larger than 12 point
   and most likely 8-10 points. You
   can use glyphs, ornaments,
   numbers, or any sort of
   character, but do not
   use images. 

» Poster size can vary, with 11″×17″
   maximum 
 finished size. 

» No limitations regarding color.

 

Expanding

Define one or two longer projects where you take one of your type sprints and expand it. Give it a “purpose” and transform it into a “real” project.

 

The Plan

For my expanded exploration I was be expanding Sprint 2, Type as Texture.

I will be exploring the immunity system and the cells involved in fighting diseases and protecting our bodies. When I first did Sprint 2, I created the Dendritic cell out of words connected to the subject. In my project expansion, I plan on doing the same thing with different cells. However, I will not be picking random cells. The other 3 cells that I have chosen to do for this project are also part of the immune system. The cells I choose are all connected in a way that is similar to a family tree. Once I have created variations for each cell, I will choose my favorites and create a poster for each cell. Under each design on the poster will be a description of the type of cell and its functions. If I have time, I plan on compiling all of the cells into a single poster design. The cells would interact with each other and possibly show the “family tree.”

Basically….

Create posters of immunity cells using words that correlate to the type of cell.

Steps

Step 1: Research

Pick your topic and do a little research so you know what you are talking about. 


» Keep a list of websites you used for
   research (include those in your research
   for this project). 
» As you research, write down words,
   phrases, that feel important or illustrative 
      > Do pencil sketches of quick visuals of
         how you might show this topic. 

Step 2: Explore

From your research and sketches, start making compositions using text-size type as textural or linear elements. Remember, while you are likely using real words, legibility is not a requirement when they are functioning as texture.

Immunity Cells

  1. Dendritic cells 
  2. Myeloid cells 
  3. Monocyte cells
  4. Hematopoietic stem cells 
  5. Combine all immunity cells into one poster
